I know Japanese snowbell can be a bit finicky...my book says they tend to wake up easily to early spring warm spells only to suffer die back when a late freeze hits. There's a gorgeous one at J.C. Raulston Arboretum, the purple leaf cultivar, that's about 8 or 9 feet tall now.
